Outline your idea for the Smashing Stereotypes project and your reasons for choosing this idea
● Which professional media products inspired you and how?
● How well did you manage your time and resources throughout the planning, production and post-
production phases?
● Which theory points might be relevant to your finished product? How and why, use examples taken from
your piece
● What have you learned from this project that might be useful for the next project / FMP?
For the Smashing stereotypes project , I produced an campaign advert against stereotypes where as a group me and my partner found actors to hold up a sign stating what people stereotype them as then we got them to say a slogan at the end for example " that's not me " we wanted them to break that stigma about them the whole idea about " Don't judge a book by its cover " so on that note the professional media that inspired me to create such a piece is another advert about a particular stereotype which is that dark skin females are not as beautiful as light skin females , here is the link to the advert (https://youtu.be/X6V1AjDqXnk ) This video expresses colourism , how people prefer the idea of light skin females over dark skinned females , from this video I decided its best to tackle all types of stereotypes which includes , discrimination , colourism , indifference and racism . How this advert inspired me it really gave out a message that equality is defiantly still a problem in this society , that then gave me the idea to express all these things in my project , because these on going issues , things that aren't spoken about enough or addressed enough that then forms the bubble of stereotyping .
Another source of professional media that inspired me was an coca cola advert the message was it takes just seven seconds to build a prejudice based on someone appearance . This Ramadan , coke invited six strangers to meet in the dark , See what they discovered and how it changed the way they see the world . This advert wasn't something you expect from coke because of how in-depth the message is , either never thought about the impact of words just the way they appear to look , immediately when the lights came on they never expected each other to look like that based on the words they said . Here is a link to the advert https://youtu.be/uZo5dWWKSos , I think that is what inspired me to have the actors just walk in front of the camera and say nothing , so they camera just captures their appearance and the sign and what people see them as , then at the end they speak up . I drew most of my inspiration from this coca cola advert because of the amazing execution , it was such a strong message that's exactly what I wanted my advert to be like .
In terms of time management , as a group we was actually quite quick in terms of pre production , so the planning stage we divided our planning into sections e.g call sheet , risk assessment and shots list ,I knew we had a deadline to make so our time management skills had to be quite sharp . I would say it was most defiantly the production side when our time management skills went off track , in terms of resources , I couldn't find enough people towards the end of production to be in our advert because we had to find people but make sure , we found a particular time when everyone was free which was the difficult part , the longer we left it the closer the deadline became . I think what took up the most time was the editing because we used a camera that captures no audio so therefore during production we had to use a voice recorder and every time we was filming someone had to clap to make sure when we edit the audio would be in sync with the video , then I came across a problem where one of the video clips had no audio to be put with it , so I had to ask for Julian's help to then find out if there was a way to get the camera audio , there was but it was fuzzing so overall the most time consuming thing would have to be production because their was so many issues regarding that .
The theory points that are of relevance to my finished project
In terms of theory we went a little bit off topic because we didn't exactly follow the theory points in terms of stereotyping females , we produced a stereotype involving not just females but males also this is because we wanted to make it as diverse as possible . They theory points that really helped us
What I have learned from this project , that might be useful for the next project / FMP
I have learned that it is better to work efficiently and always read the brief , otherwise you could potential read things wrong
